Terminology

Map Window - Where the map is graphically displayed.
Layer - A collection of geographical features/information
Metadata - Text information behind each geographic feature
GIS - Geographical Information System

Layers

Chaseonline Mapping uses four layers to each represent a set of council geographic information. These four layers are Tourism, Community, Environment and Public Services. The Tourism layer contains geographic features of interest to anyone wanting a day out in Cannock Chase District. The Community layer holds information on where the local centres are, where leisure facilities can be found and where to park in the district. Environment Layer contains features such as Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings and Recycling Points. The Public Service layer contains information on core public service information, such as planning applications made within the last 6 weeks. All layers contain information about the layers (metadata), which can be view by selecting the info tool and clicking on the geographic feature you wish to know more about.

To view layer information Click on the layers tab. The layer that is displayed in the map window is visible with a grey arrow to the side. Click on the grey arrow to expand the layer. If you wish to deselect/select geographic information attributed to the layer un tick/tick the box to the left of the layer information. Click 'Update' to refresh the map window

Navigation

To select a layer of interest Drop down the box to the top right of the screen and click on the layer of interest. Each layer contains associated council information, displayed in the legend tab.

To Zoom in on a Selected Area Click on 'Zoom In' In the map window, the mouse pointer will change to a hand with a '+' sign Click and drag the mouse pointer over the area to be zoomed in on. The map will refresh.

To Zoom in on a Point Click on 'Zoom In' In the map window, the mouse pointer will change to a hand with a '+' sign Click once over the point required to zoom in on. The map will refresh.

To Zoom out on a Selected Area Click on 'Zoom Out' In the map window, the mouse pointer will change to a hand with a '-' sign Click and drag the mouse pointer over the area to be zoomed out on. The map will refresh.

To Zoom out on a Point Click on 'Zoom Out' In the map window, the mouse pointer will change to a hand with a '-' sign In the map window, click once over the point required to zoom out on. The map will refresh.

To Move/Pan the Map Window Location Click on 'Pan' In the map window, the mouse pointer will change to a hand Click on the map window, holding down the left mouse button Drag the map across the screen. The map will refresh.

Information Tool Click on 'Info' In the map window, the mouse pointer will change to a hand with an 'i' Click on the feature you require information on A pop up box will appear listing details of the feature To close the information box down, click on the cross in the top right hand corner.

Measure Tool Click on 'Measure' In the map window, the mouse pointer will change to a hand with a ruler Click on the start point of the line you wish to measure Click along the line as many times as require (if going around corners) Double click the left mouse button to end the measurement. The final measurement (in metres) will appear in a speech box.

Search

The user can search on each layer to display geographic information associated with that layer.

To use the Search Click on the ‘Search Tab'. Drop down the box below and select the type of search. Type in the first four letters of the layer being searched upon. If you wish for the search to display the selected information at the scale the map window is currently set at tick the ‘Preserve Scale' box to the bottom of the ‘Search' Window. Click on the ‘Update' button to return view the selection in the window line. To clear the measurement click on any other tool or re-start a new measurement.
